House of Lords visit

Twenty pupils from five schools across Berkshire and Oxfordshire visited the Houses of Parliament last week to play a game of Minibridge with peers from the All Party Parliamentary Group. The children were welcomed by the Lord Speaker of the House of Lords, Baroness D'Souza.

This was followed by a tour, and then a Minibridge match in the River Room which the Lord Speaker had graciously made available for the event.

The EBU extend their thanks to Baroness Henig, Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for organising this event, and to Joan Bennett for bringing the various schools and children.

Architecturally interesting spire lucarnes (3 tiers of small dormer windows) and tower (built in 4 stages separated by string courses - projecting horizontal stonework).

A City Cup event will be held at every bridge club and a Cup presented (as a gift from me) to the club. Each cup will be engraved with the name of the City plus the Winners names and hopefully this can then become an annual event.

2nd smallest of England's ancient cathedrals (next to Oxford) but has the largest window in the "Flowing Decorated"  Gothic style  - a period of very elaborate window tracery. My new specialist subject - misericords (carved undersides of wooden choir seats) - some interesting non-religious depictions eg. a mermaid & a wife attempting to club her husband.

David Wing - Durham City Cup

Don Reid - chairman

Maureen Ball & Margaret Gilbert

Wow - so much of interest. Polymaths are amongst my heroes and the great Venerable Bede is buried here. The tower is so high that the bells cannot be heard within the Cathedral. The Bishop of Durham always stands alongside Monarchs at Coronations. Everyone should visit this magnificent building.

Notable for its unusual but beautiful lantern spire built in 1448 and for centuries used as a navigation point for ships on the River Tyne.

In the absence of a cathedral, the magnificent St. Walberge's Catholic Church is sadly closed. It has the highest spire of any English parish church and is home to nesting peregrine falcons.

Red sandstone construction permits intricate carving but being very friable requires some of the highest maintenance costs of any cathedral.
